Be A Better Poker Player With This CheatSheet

Cheatsheet, as in a quick and easy to understand guide to the best practices in Poker. But not a CheatSheet in terms of hit the Easy Button and win every single hand. As you have probably already figured out, that is not the way it works in the real world. Nevertheless, there are some fundamentals that must be kept in mind.

Perhaps you recall the now famous story about the famed coach Vince Lombardi. Lombardi made a point to begin his training season with the words “this is a football”. The point being, that even professionals need to get back to the basics. With that in mind, take a look at the following poker wisdom.

The first one sounds simple but if practiced can really make a difference. In short, do not fall for the temptation to play every hand. It is perfectly fine to fold early and often if that is what your hand suggests. It goes without saying but once again, it is always helpful to go back to the basics, so here it is again. Playing more does not necessarily translate into winning more.

The next one is about the siren call to bluff. But stop and ask yourself a serious question. Why are you supposing you want to bluff anyway? If you are honest with yourself, you may find that you reign in the number of times you bluff. Not that bluffing is not inappropriate, mind you. Just like anything else, there is a time and a place. When bluffing makes sense as a strategic or even a tactical play, have at it. Otherwise, let it go.

Next up has to do with your attitude towards the hand you happen to be holding at the moment. In other words, don’t let yourself get tripped up by the trap of falling in love with your hand. A hand is simply the cards you have to play. Either they work or they don’t. If not, fold and move on.

The last one here is about you and your bankroll. In this case you want to make sure you pick the right game for your skill level. You undoubtedly know that your goal is to be one of the best at the table. You most definitely do not want to ever find yourself surrounded by other pokers who are in such a different league than you that you could call them sharks. How to tell? One easy signal is to watch the money flow. Is it going from your pile to everyone else? If so, you are in the wrong game.

Bottom line is this: poker is a game of skill. Like any game of skill it is always helpful to review the basics.
