Heads Up On Managing Big Tournament Dollars

In terms of poker play, you certainly cannot beat the excitement of tournament play. Not only is there the built in excitement (and stress) from the tournament, there is not to be downplayed very real attraction of significantly multiplying what some refer to as your ROI. It is true that ROI or Return On Investment is a term most used in business circles. Yet, that notwithstanding, if you begin to look at the possible win amount compared to what it costs you to play you can readily see how the exact same thing applies to your poker play.

With that in mind, now let’s bring this home to a real world situation. Suppose we just so happen to be taking a look at a very large field, as in multiple table tournament such as the World Series of Poker 2015. Now take a peek at Event #28. It turns out the Event #28 is a Monster Stack 1,500 No-limit Holdem. But here is the thing to pay attention to. Take a look at the grand prize for this event. What do you see? Yep, that is a 7 digit possible win. That is, 7 digits as in a massive $1,286,942 out the door prize.

What does that have to do with the buy in? Well, take a look at the easy math. That possible win is an incredible 858 times the buy in! Hello, now do you see what is going on?

But here is the thing to pay attention to and it really does not matter what size or type of poker player you happen to be. The real question of the hour is whether or not you change your wagering tactics and amounts to match that of the massive possible win. Or, do you take a more disciplined approach to your poker play?

You see, a player who suddenly is looking at a big possible winning number may be tempted to change their ways. Call it the pressure of the game, the temptation to “go for it” or whatever. The reality is that when big numbers show up, it may be best to have a plan already in place.

Look, truth be told, there is no one right answer. Yet, at the same time, it makes sense to pay close attention to what sort of actions those at the very top of the game are more likely to take. With that mind, perhaps its better to have a plan before the game.
