Money Lines and You with Sports Betting

There are many terms used in the sports betting world. Some of these terms are thrown around so much that sometimes newcomers are taken aback. They don’t want to look silly if they speak up and ask what the terms mean. One such term is “money line”.

A Money line is actually a very simple wager. A money line is just a bet on the outright winner of the game. You may also hear the term Straight Up Wager. A straight up wager (much like you might order an adult beverage at your favorite bar or tavern) is another word that means the same thing. So whether you hear the term money line bet or straight up wager, know and understand the meaning is the same. You are essentially calling the winner of the game.

One advantage to placing a money line bet is that you don’t have to worry about point spread odds or other such factors in your wager. You are simply calling the game.

Now that is out of the way, a related question is how to read the boards at your favorite online sports books so you can figure out how to place your money line bet. Start at the beginning of the display. The first part is the teams that you are interested in placing a wager on. The very next thing you will see is exactly what we are talking about here, the money line. The numbers here in the moneyline section of the display are an indication of how much you will win and how much you have to bet to win it.

Take a look at this example. Suppose you are looking at a display that looks like this: team C -140 and team B +120. The negative sign (-) shows which team is the favorite to win. The positive sign (+) on the other hand, indicates the team that is the underdog.

Now, here’s the money part. If you were to place a bet on team C, you would need to put out $140 to possibly win $100. On the other hand, to bet on team B, you only have to put out $83.33 to win the same $100. Ignoring the math in this case since we are only making the point about moneylines, you can see that moneylines and learning what they mean and how to read them make you a smarter sports better.
