Online Poker, Unspoken But Necessary Rules Of The Road

Online poker is a rather unique casino game. Yes, you can and do experience much of the same excitement and perhaps even more as if you were sitting in a back room at a brick and mortar land based casino. At the same time, because of the fact that you are playing online there are some differences. More importantly, it is important to keep in mind that the fact that you are enjoying your poker play from the comfort of your own home should not in any way be seen as an invitation to behave much differently than you would if you were in fact seated around a live poker game.

In a word, it is all about etiquette, or the lack thereof. You may have experienced this yourself first hand with your online poker play. For whatever reason or perhaps no reason at all, it seems that more than a few online poker players consider virtual play to engage in behaviors that would not be tolerated at brick and mortar casinos. Let’s take a look at a few of these.

Perhaps the most egregious of these not so civil actions is the tendency to criticize or poke fun at a weaker poker player who makes what is seen as a rookie mistake. Understand that this does not help that poker player and it is hard to imagine a scenario where it would help you. In other words, keep the poker play talk civil. A mistake is simply that, nothing more. Is it your job to criticize a weaker player?

Another online poker etiquette violation is the tendency for some poker players who seem to feel obligated to comment on hands they are not even involved in. What is this all about? Think about it from the other side for a moment. How would you feel if you were holding a hot hand and another player not even in mix keeps urging another player to fold? Not so good, huh?

Now do understand this is not about the normal to be expected table talk. No, there is actually a term for that. It is called ‘leveling’ and is expected in poker play. On the other hand, talking about another player’s hand is unethical to say the least.

The point being simply that online poker players would do well to consider online poker play to not be so very different from live table games. In other words, if you wouldn’t say it in person, don’t say from behind the computer screen.
