Online Poker Wisdom: Stay Within Your Lines

It goes without saying, but we had better go ahead and say it anyway just in case there are any newcomers lurking in the shadows; wining at Poker, online or offline is a longer term game. In other words, its a marathon, not a sprint. And a part of knowing that is realizing that to be successful over the long term, you have to have the funds to stay in the game.

Did you know that a shockingly large number of poker plays burn through their online bankroll in nothing flat? Interestingly, its not just the amateur online poker players. Even winning players seem to have picked up a very bad habit of blowing through their bankroll. Its as if that online bankroll is burning a hole in their pocket and they can’t wait to let it go.

First, stop for a moment and get the simplest and most profound advice of all time. More so in poker perhaps than other games, but you absolutely must only ever play within the bounds of your bankroll. Consider how not following this simple wisdom can work against you.

Remember in the online poker world, its a game of you versus everyone else. The problem here is that also means its your bankroll against everyone else too. Think of it this way. If Poker was a zero - sum game, you are wiped out pretty quickly. Of course, if you turn out to be the wining player, you are ahead of the game. The point to get, the point to tatto across your brain is that you have to keep enough money in your online bankroll to roll with the punches. In other words, you have the funds to withstand the inevitable peaks and valleys of a long term strategy.

How do you do this? While you know that your bankroll is in fact limited, you need to have the mindset that it is not. This is easy to do if you only ever stick to the rule of never having more than 5% of your bankroll at play at any one time. If you want to go extreme, you can even drop that percentage down a few notches, to say one or two percent.

It works like this: if you know you never ever have to worry about going broke in any one game, the chances are that you won’t. Then at the end of the year, when you tally up your long term winnings, you will most likely see you are ahead of the game.
